Hussan Jamala

Born in Alpuri, a small town in Shangla District, Pakistan, a dedicated woman began her journey as a pioneer for women’s rights in one of the country’s most conservative and underdeveloped regions. She married at just 14 but persisted in her education despite immense societal pressure, balancing her studies with traditional roles. Her determination led her to complete her matriculation, even as family, ethnic, and societal norms discouraged her. Facing ongoing obstacles, she became a Lady Health Worker, contributing tirelessly in the aftermath of Pakistan’s 2005 earthquake, providing essential services in one of the country’s most impoverished areas. Soon after, she pursued a career as a teacher and collaborated with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on women’s rights.

During the Taliban’s harsh regime, when women’s education, employment, and rights were severely restricted, she transformed her home into a school and a hub for women’s empowerment, risking her safety to continue her mission. Under her leadership, her home became a refuge for women and girls seeking education, where she also organized a village organization aimed at supporting women through the darkest times. Post-Taliban, she extended her support to organizations like the MRDP, spearheading door-to-door campaigns to uplift her community. She also championed the cause of coal miners’ families, especially widows and children, meticulously gathering data on over 8,500 coal miners’ widows to address their needs.

A certified representative in numerous NGOs, including PPF and MRDP, her efforts span not only her own district of Shangla but also neighboring areas. Her achievements and commitment have been recognized by major media outlets, including Arab News, Dawn News, The International News, and The Express Tribune, each chronicling her resilience and dedication to women’s rights in Pakistan.
